It took more than a decade, a series of deadly outbreak tied to food such as beans, spinach, and beef, as well as the strange bedfellows Coalition–victim advocates, public health and food industry representatives–to push through a major revamp of the first food safety legislation since the 1930s.

But other experts and supporters say the food safety Modernization Act (FSMA) signed by U.s. President Barack Obama in January still has flaws and worries will be watered down through lack of funding.

United States by the majority of these have some of the safest food in the world. However, approximately one in six people fell ill from eating contaminated products each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"The whole system is built to react against those sick" or for the discovery of contaminated food, said Erik Olson, Director of the Pew health group's food program.
